Sourcing Tile and Slabs for a Muskoka Project? Start in Toronto

Many Muskoka cottage owners spend the week in the GTA. If that’s you, the easiest place to choose cottage materials is close to home, before the long weekend drive north.

Large-format slabs are hard to judge from a small sample or a photo. At our showroom at 111 Cartwright Ave, you can stand in front of a full slab and see how a floor tile, a slab and a mosaic work together in one room. Our team has spent 15+ years helping clients match material to the way a space is actually used.

Delivery to Muskoka can be arranged per project through a trusted carrier, or you can pick up at our Toronto showroom.

Choosing Tile for Muskoka Cottage Conditions

A cottage asks more of its surfaces than a city home does. Cold winters, wet feet, lake views and long empty months all affect which tile or slab will still look right in ten years.

Seasonal and Unheated Cottages

If the heat goes off in winter, the floor goes through freeze and thaw cycles. Porcelain is a strong choice here because it absorbs very little water (0.5% or less by definition), so there is less moisture inside the tile to expand when it freezes. The tile is only half the job, though. The subfloor, membrane and setting materials also need to suit a cold building, which is worth confirming with your installer before you order.

Hot Tubs, Steps and Boathouse Decks

Outdoor areas need a thicker, textured product. Porcelain pavers at 20 mm can be laid on gravel, sand or pedestals, and they don’t need sealing. Choose a grip finish for anything that gets wet, and a lighter colour for areas in full sun so the surface stays comfortable underfoot. For floating docks or structures that flex, check with your builder first, since rigid tile needs a stable base.

Cottage bathrooms see wet feet from the lake, steam from long showers and damp towels left on the floor. A matte or lightly textured porcelain gives better grip underfoot and holds up to constant moisture. Large-format tile on the walls means fewer grout lines to clean, and mid-tone colours with some natural variation hide water spots better than solid black or bright white.

Great Rooms, Fireplaces and Kitchen Islands

This is where large-format slabs make the most difference. Fewer grout lines keep the focus on the view, and a single slab can wrap a fireplace or the end of an island. Porcelain handles the heat around a fireplace surround and resists stains in a busy cottage kitchen. Our porcelain slab thickness guide explains which thickness suits walls, floors and countertops.

Bringing the Muskoka Look Indoors

Granite, limestone and warm wood tones read naturally in lake country. Stone-look porcelain gives you that palette without the sealing and upkeep of natural stone. For exterior walls on a cottage or boathouse, the same material comes as porcelain facade cladding.

Porcelain Slab Collections for Muskoka Kitchens and Fireplaces

These slabs suit the main living spaces of a cottage: islands, countertops, fireplace walls and walk-in showers. Marble looks like Statuario work in a bright, modern space, while darker stone looks such as Nero Marquina or Pietra Di Gre suit a warmer, rustic room. Planning the whole room? Floor and Wall Tile for Cottage Living

Field tile for floors and walls through the rest of the cottage: entries, hallways, laundry rooms and bedrooms. Pick a finish for the room’s traffic and moisture, then match it to the slab or paver next to it so transitions look planned.

Mosaic Tile for Cottage Bathrooms and Backsplashes

Mosaics add colour and pattern in small doses: a shower floor, a niche, a powder room wall or a kitchen backsplash. Bring a sample of your main floor tile so we can match undertones. More layouts are on our bathroom tile page.

Porcelain is the usual choice because it absorbs very little water, which limits freeze damage. Your installer should also confirm that the subfloor and setting materials are suited to a cold building.

Yes, on a stable base. Choose a 20 mm paver with a grip finish for wet areas. Floating docks and other structures that flex should be checked by your builder first.

We’re at 111 Cartwright Ave, Toronto, a few minutes from Highway 401 and the start of Highway 400. Bracebridge is roughly a two-hour drive.

In many cases, yes. Checking a sample in the cottage’s own light is the best way to confirm colour and finish.

Porcelain resists heat, stains and UV light, so it won’t yellow in a sunny lake-facing kitchen the way some quartz can. Quartz is easier to repair if an edge chips. Our comparison of porcelain slabs vs quartz covers the details.
